Vinyl Window Replacement

The Default Choice, and Usually the Right One

Vinyl is what goes into most Riverside houses, and for most openings that is a sound decision rather than a compromise. It insulates well on its own, it does not need painting, it does not corrode, and the price sits far enough below fiberglass that the difference is worth a serious look before anyone spends it.

The material has one property that matters more here than anywhere else, and it is the thing installers get wrong.

Vinyl Moves

Rigid PVC has a coefficient of thermal expansion several times that of glass and several times that of aluminium. A wide frame sitting in direct afternoon sun in July is measurably larger than the same frame at seven in the morning. On a narrow bedroom window that movement disappears into the tolerances. On a wide slider or a patio door it does not.

Fitted with proper clearance and shimmed square, the frame grows into the gap that was left for it and nothing happens. Fitted tight against a slightly out of square opening, the frame has nowhere to go. It bows very slightly, the sash track narrows, and the door that ran beautifully in March starts dragging in August.

That is not a defective window. It is an installation that did not respect the material.

What We Do Differently

We check the opening for square before ordering, not after delivery. Riverside slab-on-grade construction settles, and a forty year old rough opening is often out by enough to matter. We size the unit to the smallest measurement across the opening, leave the shim gap the manufacturer specifies rather than the gap that looks tidy, and set the shims at the load points instead of wherever the gap happens to be widest.

On anything wide we also look at colour. Dark vinyl runs far hotter in the sun than white and moves proportionally more, and some dark exterior finishes are only warranted for specific elevations. Worth knowing before you choose it for a west wall.

Retrofit or Full Frame

Most vinyl work here is retrofit. The original aluminium frame stays in the wall, the vinyl unit sets into it behind a flush fin, and the stucco is never disturbed. It is quicker, it is cheaper, and it avoids the patch line that never quite matches. The cost is glass area, because the new frame sits inside the old one and you lose roughly an inch on each dimension.

Full frame vinyl makes sense when the old frame is corroded, out of square beyond correction, or leaking at the sill. Then the frame comes out and the new one gets flashed properly into the opening.

Where We Say Choose Something Else

Very wide openings on a west elevation. Large fixed picture units where a slight frame bow shows in the reflection. Any opening where the previous vinyl window already failed the same way. In those cases the extra money for fiberglass buys real stability, and we would rather say so at the quote than fit the cheap answer twice.
